Theatre, Boston University 949 Commonwealth Ave. Boston, MA 02215
April 26 at 8 PM and
April 27 at 2 PM
Admission is free and all are welcome. A reception and discussion will
follow.
Pera Palas is the 1996 John Gassner Memorial Award winner.
Is re-invention of an individual, or of and entire country, possible
or even desirable? This is the central question of Pera Palas, a
play about Turkey, and her emergence as a modern, secular state in the
20th century. At the Pera Palas Hotel in Istanbul, 26 characters depict
three separate but interconnected stories that crisscross through time
from 1918 to the present. Weaving a tapestry of East and West, Islam and
Christianity, playwright Unel examines the seeds of rebellion and the consequences
of choice on a society and, most importantly, on the hearts of its people.
Mr. Unel is also looking for Turkish individuals who might be able to
help with this reading in some small way that won't take too much time.
He needs help in designing very simple costumes, music, and some language
coaching for the actors. You may contact him at the following phone, email
or address:
Sinan Unel 264 B Bradford Street
Provincetown, MA 02657, (508) 487-4715 or (617) 859-5810 (in Boston).
